Amsterdam
After I got my beach fill in Pesaro, I headed off to Amsterdam to meet my dad! There's a good chance that he was even more excited that I was about this, and not just because he'd be seeing his darling daughter for the first time in almost a year.
Amsterdam took me by surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect, other than good cafes, but luckily my dad did his research and a few friends gave me some advice. The architecture and the layout of the city was very cool.
My dad was already well-settled when I arrived, and had the general lay of the land. The morning after I got there we headed off on a hop-on hop-off canal tour. I've seen a lot of new cities this year and have really come to love the hop-on hop-off tours. I will only do one when I know I can take advantage of the free travel for the day, and try to use it in place of public transportation. I'm glad we did the canal tour because that was how I found out about the Museum of Purses and Handbags, which was an absolute delight (and also gave me a new life goal).
One night, after checking out the tourist madness that is the Red Light District, we happened upon a little pub specializing in gin where I got to try Apple Cinnamon gin, Lemon gin, and Chocomint gin (yep, you read that right!). Needless to say, that last bottle came back to Milan with me.
We also went to the seaside (it's an addiction, I know!) for the day and checked out the Northern European beach scene in Zandvoort. Windy. Chilly. And the water looked SO much colder than the Italian seaside. But, instead of the sunbeds and umbrellas that we rent in Italy, the Dutch had sunbeds and tents to protect from the wind, and there were people out there enjoying a day at the beach!
Overall, Amsterdam impressed and I'm looking forward to doing a weekend back there soon!

Pesaro . . . Perchè no?
I'm baaaaaack.
Sincerest apologies for the heavy delays in updating my blog. As you will all soon read, I had a very busy August studying various beaches in Italy, and studying various coffee shops in Amsterdam. But now I'm back in Canada and have a bit more time to share the results of my studies with you.
Let's start in Pesaro. This was my first time visiting the East Coast of Italy during beach season. Pesaro is just south of Rimini, and judging by the view we got from our hotel room, and the number of beach chairs available for rent, it's an equally major beach destination. The beach was endless. Our hotel was beachfront, and so we got settled and headed down to rent our beach chairs for the next three days. Looking back, seeing as we pretty much spent every waking moment on the beach, I'm sure we could have even done without the hotel!
The beach is incredible. The sand is so fine, and the water on the way in was like bathwater. This was likely due to the fact that it was so shallow and that there was a long breakwater protecting the beach.
If you're researching beach holidays in Italy, I'd suggest Pesaro. Why Pesaro? Why not?
Cominciamo a Pesaro.
Perchè no?

The Smaller The Beach, The Higher The Cost.
Supply and demand? I vaguely remember studying something along those lines.
So before I jet off for another weekend at the beach, I thought I'd tell you about the last beach I visited! A whole two weeks ago. It feels like years and I feel as white as the wall I'm leaning against. Sigh.
We headed off to Portofino, but in the end I never actually saw Portofino! For my wallet's sake, that's just fine. To get to Portofino, you take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure. We almost missed our stop because at 8am, having been on the train since 6am, we were all soundly passed out. Ending up at another seaside town in Italy is never the end of the world though. Luckily, we woke up just in time and jumped off. A short bus ride after, we were getting off in Paraggi. This is actually a great shot to show you how small and secluded it is.While waiting for the bus, we had called one of the beaches to ask about renting some sunbeds for the day. I thought I was having problems with my Italian when he quoted me €30 per person on the deck, or €90 euro per two people on the sandy beach. Was this an open bar or something? Thinking that maybe I had misunderstood, I said we'd come by when we got there, and sure enough, those were the prices. There are only four beaches to choose from in Paraggi, and in the end we decided just to go with it, and hand over our life savings for a day on the beach. Now, having paid €30, this is when I decided that I would not be leaving the beach to go to Portofino, just a 5 minute bus ride away, but instead spending every last minute possible there to really make the most of that fee. And I did. And it was glorious.
Fortunatamente, ci siamo svegliate in tempo a scendere.

Milan Isn't So Hot ...
... As in it's not so great. Because in terms of heat it's SWELTERING.
By the way, it is my right as a Canadian to dedicate an entire post to the weather. Especially because I come from the West Coast and we are not raised in 45 degree weather.
We got a break from the heat the other night with a nice little thunderstorm, and I can happily report that at 3am it reached a chilly 15 degrees. If I had a sleeping bag (yes, I'm a bad Canadian sans sleeping bag) I would have moved myself out to the balcony to spend the night in the cool air.
But that was just a one day breather. It was needed, because as of Sunday I was pretty sure that I would never move another muscle again. The heat is back in full force though. It's so hot that you can't sleep, you can't even enjoy 5 minutes post shower without breaking a sweat, you can't style your hair properly (this is important!), and you have to change outfits anytime you come home. Of course, some days you can't even fathom going outside so at least you'll save on some laundry! Errands take three times as long, because gone are the days of "walking with purpose." Now, we walk slow enough to avoid breaking a sweat (impossible). Now, we take extra time to cross to the other side of the street just to walk in the shade. The weather forecast gets your hopes up with a predicted 34 degree high, but then you catch sight of the "feels like 45" and that feeling of dread sets in.
And hey, guess what? With this heat and humidity, comes MOSQUITOES. Not little pesky things that leave a little red mark on my arm that lasts 10 minutes. Giant Tiger mosquitoes that leave a bite that swells to the size of a golf ball and itches for a solid week. They also like to hide out inside and attack you when you least expect it. You could be standing naked in a changing room trying to take advantage of the amazing sales going on, and while you're trying to decide which dress to buy (all), you look down and notice three new bites on your leg and a very smug and full mosquito hanging out on the wall. TRUE STORY. The other day, in the midst of a nice aperitivo, just as the sun had gone down and we started to feel hope that the heat was gone, the mosquitoes attacked. The entire patio stood up and pulled out cans of bug repellent and started spraying. When I watched a man spray his gorgeous leather shoes I realized that mosquitoes will someday rule the world. Here's the kicker, some scientists say the world would function just fine without mosquitoes. JUST DANDY (I already know I won't translate that phrase to Italian...).
So, there you have it. Life isn't all sunshine, beaches, good food, and better wine. But, my next blog post will be!

Where the Wives Ruled and the Focaccia Makes You Drool
Ok, one non-travel post is enough for now, especially because now that my internship is over until September, I will have lots of time to travel, and even more time to write about it!
One sunny Sunday a couple of weeks ago, we jetted (that's Italian for took a crowded train ride) off to Camogli. Camogli is said to come from ''casa delle moglie'' (home of the wives) because all the men were out fishing while the women ruled the city. I may have taken some liberties with that definition. Anyway, it's a colourful little fishing village, and supposedly colourful so that all those fishermen could find their way home at night from the sea.
The beaches are pebbly, but no complaints. The food more than makes up for it. After a day baking in the sun, we headed out in search of the famous focaccia di Recco, that although should only be found in Recco, is found elsewhere under the name ''focaccia al formaggio.'' Focaccia is already dreamy enough in this province, but once you add cheese, you might as well just sit down and give up on ever finding anything as delicious again in your life.
We should all know by now that my photo skills are lacking, but luckily I can count on my good Canadian friend to snap a pic or two. Side bar - when she's not photographing the world, she's baking up a storm and if you're lucky enough to live in Milan then you can enjoy her baked goods! And if you don't live here then you can at least check out her site and drool.

La Canadese's First Internship
Ok folks, contrary to popular belief, I didn't come here just to gallivant around and make you all insanely jealous of my life. I gave up my secure life in Vancouver to pursue a dream, and I am happy to report that over this past month I came a little bit closer to achieving that dream. I landed my first internship, in a buying office that works for a well-known upscale department store in the States. <Insert appluase here>
Things get hectic when the buyers arrive for Men's Fashion Week, and the main men's Spring Summer 2014 sales season, and the women's pre-Spring 2014 sales season. That's right, what you're buying right now is sooooooo last year, and we're all focused on what you'll be buying in-store next year.
I got quite a bit of hands on experience during my month there, and really got to understand the life of a multi-brand buyer. I saw all of the administrative support that needs to be done, but the most interesting part was definitely accompanying the buyers to their showroom appointments. It made me think back to a couple of project we did for school, where we were given a budget to buy a collection, and had to make sure we chose the right assortment of pieces, sizes, colours, and tops to bottoms. It wasn't easy. I had little cut-out images of each item that I kept rearranging until I had finally narrowed down my decision. Assisting the buyers through their appointments, I was in awe at times. They were so decisive, which I know comes with experience and knowing your market. Needless to say, I look forward to being in their shoes!
Going on the showroom appointments was definitely the most interesting part, but the most fun was going to some of the shows with the extra tickets that we had! Versace was the obvious highlight, not just because of the gorgeous male models who appeared to be covered in huge fluorescent band-aids.
I'll be back there in September for the main event (Women's Fashion Week and sales season for the main Spring Summer 2014 collections), so unfortunately for all of you I won't be creeping around outside of the fashions shows with my BFF Anna Wintour or have any backstage exclusives.

Alassio
I may have threatened that the vagabond trend was over, but if all goes according to plan, it will never be over! Right now I feel like one of the few people who stays in the city on weekends, and it sucks. So let's flash back to a lovely long weekend that my other Canadian and I had a few weeks ago, in a dreamy little seaside town called Alassio.
I fell in love with the town 11 years ago when I was working as an au-pair, and the family asked if I wanted to work full time at the seaside for six weeks in the summer. Life tip: If someone offers you a full time job working on a beach, ALWAYS SAY YES. The beach stretches for kilometres, and it is the most beautiful sand. It's also very clean because almost every inch is covered by lounge chair and umbrella rentals, and the revenue helps the city keep the beach clean, so even though you have to pay to relax on the beach, it's a very civilized way to beach it up.
Back to the present, we escaped for a seaside long weekend which was a welcome break from city life. With nothing to do but relax and explore, we got to forget about the stress of job/internship hunting. The most exciting surprise was finding a vegetable that I fell in love with and have dreamed about for 11 years, but seems to only exist here. I remember trying to find it in every produce department back home, and received such strange looks when I described it that I began to think I had imagined it entirely. We also found the best street meat in Italy, in the form of an aperitivo BBQ. I also found my dreamy newspaper clutch, which I'll photograph soon for you so you can all enjoy it.
Abbiamo anche trovato ''the best street meat'' in Italia.
