Palermo - SICILIA

Keeping up the pattern of never spending a weekend in Milan, we jet-setted* off to Palermo in the middle of April. It wasn't just all fun and games though, I promise. We're doing a project for a company based in Palermo, and we figured that the best way to do research was to see the city firsthand!

*a glamourous way of saying we took a Ryanair flight from the farthest airport from Milan at an unimaginable hour and stood in line forever so that we could attempt to get decent seats and put our bags in the overhead storage instead of at our feet.

Sadly, my first impression of Palermo, or Sicily for that matter, was the garbage. The bus ride in from the airport gives you a close-up view of all of the garbage that people just leave on the streets. Of course, this is gone by the time you make it in to the city, but even the city itself lacks the overall clean feeling that Milan has. Skip past the Italian to see the photos.

Siccome non rimango mai a Milano per un weekend, siamo andate a Palermo per un weekend ad aprile. Non era proprio una vacanza però, ve lo prometto. Facciamo un progetto per un'azienda a Palermo, e abbiamo deciso che andare a Palermo a fare un po' di ricerca è ovviamente la cosa logica a fare.

Sfortunatamente, la mia prima impressione di Palermo, anzi di Sicilia, erano i rifiuti. Sull'autostrada dall'aeroporto alla città, si vede benissimo tutti i rifiuti che la gente lascia per strada. Però, arrivando in città non si vede piu i rifiuti, ma anche la città manca un senso di pulizia che si trova a Milano per esempio (almeno, che secondo me si trova a Milano).

With the negative out of the way, I can tell show you all of the things we did and loved. For starters, we touristed up and jumped on another big red bus.
Adesso che ho raccontato le cose negative, posso farvi vedere tutte le cose che abbiamo fatto, come essere turiste sul pullman rosso!

Which allowed us to capture impressive shots of all of the statues, like this horse that looks like he's about to leap off of the building.

Dove potevamo fare le foto delle statue, come questo cavallo che sembra di stare per venire giu dal tetto.

And we all know how impressed I am by enormous statues that just hang out on top of buildings.
E sappiamo gia come sono sempre innamorata dalle statue che si trovano sui tetti di un palazzo.

We drank like Sicilians. And ate like Sicilians, too. But I don't do food photos.

Abbiamo bevuto come i siciliani. Abbiamo mangiato come i siciliani. Però, non mi piace fare le foto del cibo.

We discovered hidden fountains.
Abbiamo trovato le fontane nascoste.

We crashed Sicilian weddings.
E eravamo ''invitate'' ad un matrimonio sicilano.

We admired the fact that even horse-drawn carriages don't park logically. Or it could just be that the horse is used to standing on the sidewalk to stay away from the crazy drivers.
Abbiamo visto che anche le carrozze con i cavalli non parcheggiano in un modo logico. Oppure, potrebbe essere solo che il cavallo è abituato a stare sulla marciapiede per stare il piu lontano possibile dai guidatori pazzi.

After working all day on Saturday (as seen above), we went to Mondello on Sunday. Look at the colour of the water, or the sky, or the sand.
Dopo che abbiamo lavorato tutto il giorno sabato (come si vede sopra), siamo andati a Mondello la domenica. Guardate il colore del mare, o del cielo, o della sabbia.

Look at whatever colour you want, JUST LOOK.

Anche le barche siciliane sono colorati!

That sums up my weekend in Sicily, a phrase that I never would have expected myself to say. But when it's only a cheap short flight away, I hope to do many more weekend trips there in the future!
E questo era il mio weekend in Sicilia, una frase che non ho pensato mai a dire. Ma quando si puo andare solo con un volo economico, spero di andarci molte piu volte nel futuro!
